Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker, now with the all-important pause button
I find The Nutcracker a bit hard to explain to fidgety kids, so before I fork over $50 a seat to take them to see it in person, I'm going to let them watch Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker to their heart's content.
What makes this DVD's production different from what you'd see in person is the fact that the gorgeous San Francisco Ballet performance is edited way down for shorter attention spans; and there's narration from a (not entirely cheesy) cartoon fairy who helps kids understand why Clara is so happy to receive a nutcracker, or why there is a Chinese Dragon running around the stage. Well that, and the fact that the audience can take a bathroom break whenever they want without missing a thing.
As with their much-loved (and CMP recommended) Swan Lake DVD, your kids will have a blast getting up and learning traditional ballet steps from both "real" children and student ballerinas. My kids did. And I give huge props to moms Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller of Prima Princessa for showing boys dancing alongside the girls.
If your kids dance around so much after the first act that they tire themselves out? Just put them to bed dreaming of ballerinas and let them watch the second act the following night. Just try doing that at the theater. -Christina
Cool Baby Kid
Prima Princessa's Nutcracker is beautiful, entertaining video that your little princess is sure to cherish for many years. Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller capture this amazing story and present it in an amazing way. My little princess stayed focused for the entire 40 minute video. It provides easy to learn dance moves such as the pirouettes and jetes. The steps are explained in a clear, easy to understand fashion. Children ages 2-8 would be thrilled with this video. The video presents excerpts from the San Francisco Ballet as well as the School of American Ballet. The magical dances, breathtaking scenery, and classical musical make the video both educational and entertaining. This video would make an excellent stocking stuffer for the upcoming holiday season. Prima Princessa is very excited to see our new Holiday DVD, "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcacker" in the Wrestling Addicted Mom Gift Guide. Thanks for the great review too!
Holiday Gift Guide Gifts for Children: Prima Princessa Neither of my girls are enrolled in dance, they’d like to be, and I’d love to enroll them in some sort of dance class but there’s a few limitations right now when it comes to that. You can find my girls dancing around to anything around the house, they really do enjoy dancing.
One of their favorite videos to dance with is Prima Princessa presents Swan Lake, so I was so thankful to find out that a new video has been added to the series, Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker. The newest addition to the Prima Princessa Presents series came within perfect timing with the holiday season. The girls couldn’t be happier watching the real life ballerinas on stage performing and then participating in the video as well trying out all the moves and then trying to dance with the ballerinas at the same time.
Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker is the perfect Christmas movie for dancing divas aged 3-7. The video is very interactive and includes a cute little cartoon fairy ballerina princess that takes you on a Christmas adventure along with snow fairies and toy soldiers, your daughter will have a blast dancing around in her little tutu just like she’s a real ballerina.

Prima Princessa - ballet gift for girls
Here is the review: (October 19, 2009)
Toy soldiers, sugar plum fairies, and a nutcracker coming to life, all make for a timeless Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker. I remember my first time seeing the Nutcracker ballet....I was with my mom. I knew when I had a little girl of my own, this was one tradition I’d like to keep. She’s only 2, but I’ve found a child-friendly way to introduce her to the magic of ballet in Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker.
What is it?
Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker is a 40 minute DVD featuring the world famous San Francisco Ballet performing excerpts from “Nutcracker”. But that’s not all... it features:
Cartoon Character Prima Princessa, who narrates the performance for little ones so they understand what’s going on in the story (since there are no words in a ballet)
School of American Ballet, students who dance and demonstrate real ballet steps to the viewer at the end of each Act of The Nutcracker
Vocabulary - children viewing learn the names of various ballet steps
Children - Dressed up in tutus, the children are seen dancing and watching “The Nutcracker” performance together
Special Features - in addition to the main performance, you can also access more demos of ballet steps and a holiday party too.
An enchanted afternoon:
I picked this afternoon for our special mommy & me time. We were going to watch Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker. We gathered up all our favorite dolls and animals along with a blanket or two, and began the DVD. She sat still the entire time with her eyes so focused on the ballerinas. Oh, how I wish I knew what she was thinking! I was really surprised she wasn’t talking more throughout the DVD, as she usually asks questions. But, she just sat and stared.......yes, she was enchanted with ballet, just like her mommy.
THEN........at the end, she asked me to get up and dance all over the living room floor. She did the toddler version of an arabesque and glissade (she was paying attention – sort of). She was soooo excited. I only wish I’d had the video camera in the room.
It’s been years since I’ve seen The Nutcracker and it still takes my breath away. This performance, albeit in short excerpts, was magnificent.......the music.......the snow falling. The 30-40 minutes of the DVD is perfect for a young child as are the activities (small ballet lessons), incorporated into the breaks. This DVD wouldn’t be a substitute at all for ballet lessons, but it’s an easy way to see if a child is even interested. Girls and aspiring ballerinas will adore Prima Princessa, as she’s an extra girlie character , with ballet slippers, tutu, AND fairy wings.
We’ll be watching Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker again and again throughout this holiday season and beyond! And, one day, I’ll take my daughter to see the ballet in person.
ACTIVITY: Visit to find Prima Princessa Coloring Pages......you’ll have a fun activity to do after watching the show. Don’t forget......there’s also Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake.

I am happy to hear we may have inspired the start of a holiday tradition of attending "The Nutcracker " for your family! I have many fond memories of attending "The Nutcracker" as a child with my family. It is such a wonderful holiday ballet.

Prima Princessa- bringing ballet into your living room!
Here’s Posh Little’s Review of Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker:
As a child I remember how envious I was of my best friend each year around Christmas. Not because of the mounds of presents she would receive but because of her family's yearly tradition of seeing The Nutcracker. The whole family would wear their prettiest dresses like they were going to a ball! As a 6 year old girl who loved ballet and puffy dresses, it seemed even more magical than Disneyland! I grew up dreaming that someday my family would have the same tradition.
My husbands biggest argument for not adopting such a tradition, outside of the $100+ ticket price (x5), is that the kids are not really old enough to understand and appreciate what's going on. He said he didn't really know what was going on! With the $500+ cost associated, I would normally agree. But, the girls are now obsessed with The Nutcracker! They yell at me every day to Watch the "Nutcracker Ballet"' with the "scary mouses" on my computer thanks to Prima Princessa's Nutcracker. It's an amazing 40 minute DVD that brings The Nutcracker to young audiences and narrates the magical tail about Clara, the Mouse King and her mysterious Nutcracker.
Just like Prima Princessa's Swan Lake, you just can't watch this sitting down! Your cheerful flying fairy guide, Prima Princessa, narrates excerpts from the world famous San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker. With breaks for along the way to get up, jump, twirl, practice and learn ballet moves, your tutu clad (or pajama) princesses will love this interactive and fun guide to the Nutcracker. $11.49 @ PrimaPrincessa.com
Review by The Mom Buzz:
Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker - Perfect for Christmas
During the holidays, there are certain shows, movies, performances and music that definitely help set the mood. One performance that ballet companies put on every Christmas Season is The Nutcracker. And truthfully, children as young as three can enjoy the music, costumes, dancing and "action". Yes - there is action as the Nutcracker battles the Mouse King. Plus, your children will get to see snow fairies, toy soldiers, an array of fantastic costumes and scenery.
So it's no wonder that Prima Princessa chose The Nutcracker, performed by the San Francisco Ballet, to feature in their newest DVD. The cartoon ballerina fairy, Prima Princessa, leads a group of children through the magical journey of the Nutcracker, explaining scenes so that children can follow along. In between the story, Prima Princessa will explain certain moves to a group of Prima Princessa Ballerinas (young children) and the School of American Ballet will show how to do these moves. You can see a preview here: Prima Princessa Clip of The Nutcracker.
My children and I really enjoyed the first Prima Princessa DVD, which featured Swan Lake. My son would even dance along! But I love the story for The Nutcracker even more, so this has moved to the top of my must-have list for little girls. Plus, it would make the best stocking stuffer for Christmas for your child - along with a Nutcracker, perhaps?
Overall, the video encourages movement, pretend-play and creativity - plus it introduces performance arts! It's definitely a video you can feel good about letting your children watch.
Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker is only $12.99 for a 40 minute show - perfect for children ages 3 to 6. Already it has gotten 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon! So, if you want a holiday gift for a little princess, ballerina, fairy or dancer in your life - definitely consider Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker!
Thanks Erin for buzzing about "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker"over at your blog "The Mom Buzz". Our first DVD, "Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake" was a huge hit with her family, and she is looking forward to "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker" getting her gang into the Christmas spirit. I love her idea of pairing DVD "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker" with a nutcracker as a fun Christmas gift for a little girl.

Review by Remarkably Great:
"Mummy, this is berry good."
That was my three-year-old’s comment as we watched the DVD Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker. In her three-year-old world, those words are a glowing recommendation. She is at that age where she loves to dress up in her fairy costumes and whirl around the room so this DVD is very popular in our house at the moment!
Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker is, in a word, delightful. I am not a huge ballet fan but when I was living in London I saw the Nutcracker at Christmas at The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and really enjoyed it.
What I like about this DVD is that that there is a combination of animation (a cartoon fairy ballerina narrates); ballet performance from the San Francisco Ballet; School of American Ballet students demonstrate actual ballet moves; and of course, there are mini ballerinas and fairies (just like my three-year-old) tottering around. Add to this a Christmas/holiday theme and you have a winner of a DVD for your little princess (and prince too!).
Just like Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake, the Nutcracker DVD is fantastic for introducing youngsters to the beauty and culture of ballet. (The Nutcracker is also one of those Christmas traditions that never lose their appeal.)
In this world where kids are bombarded with technology and "stuff" and seem to grow up so fast, this interlude with snow fairies, toy soldiers and ballerinas is a reminder of the beauty and wonderment of childhood!
Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker has just signed with a distributor in Australia so the DVDs will be available in stores soon. For more information on Prima Princessa DVDs go to primaprincessa.com or check out the blog.
Thanks Emily for reviewing "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker" on your fabulous blog "Remarkably Great!" We love hearing that our DVD is "berry good" in your house!

I Prescribe: Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker DVD
For: Toddler & preschooler culture and fun
Prescriber’s Notes: Since you can’t take your 3 to 5 year old chicas to the San Fran Ballet or the School of American Ballet, bring the ballet to them. Girlie girls will enjoy watching a Christmas ballet performance in short bursts which is perfect for their itty bitty attention spans. This DVD keeps things interesting by changing up the scenery between the ballet, the ballet school, and the Prima Princess Ballerinas, which are pint-sized twirlers. Definitely eye candy for the under 7 crowd.
Thanks Dawn for prescribing "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker" for the holidays! Letting one's toddler dance around at home to our show is certainly easier and more affordable than taking a little one to the theater. We love your review and all the cool tips on the site.

Do you know what this is? I will tell you...
Back in the haze of Blogher, I mentioned a dvd, Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake. I am telling you, not only is Miss Peach dancing around my living room, but The Little Man is as well. Not to mention the fact that Mommy is more than a bit proud that both my children know Tchaikovsky is the composer of Swan Lake! (little smarty pants)
Well, the good folks at Prima Princessa have done it again with the equally fabulous Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker. I can't express how wonderful these dvd's are (think Sesame Street meets San Francisco Ballet performing Nutcracker)...I actually enjoy when the kiddos are watching it...The music is a nice change from The Backyardigans and The Wonder Pets :P
What I love most is that two stay at home moms put their heads together and came up with a winner. Stephanie and Mary Kate have been so cool as to offer a free dvd to someone in the comments. So leave me a comment and one of you will get The Nutcracker...Yay!
We love this review by Napwarden.com. Our first DVD was a big hit and we are glad to see our new one is too. We agree with Napwarden that everyone needs a nap! That would make a good Christmas gift! And by the way, we love this photo of your daughter in her tutu watching "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker".
Momprenuers Stephanie and Mary Kate of Prima Princessa - Great Christmas DVD Gift for Girls
Review by CPA MOM:
My Take: Back in March 2008, I reviewed the first Prima-Princessa DVD - "Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake." That was just before my daughter started taking ballet lessons at school (we have an awesome teacher/parent who gives the girls classes right in the school while my daughter is in after-care so she gets top-shelf ballet lessons and I don't have to take her anywhere). So I was tickled pink to received the latest Prima Princessa DVD, Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker. Just like the original DVD, this one combines scenes of little children dancing along side clips of professionals performing The Nutcracker Ballet, all narrated by "Prima Princessa." And it's not just the performances - the Prima Princessa DVDs include "how-to" segments for real ballet steps! I like these DVDs so much I've offered them to my daughter's teacher to show the kids as an introduction to ballet when their lessons start up again in a few weeks. I highly recommend both Prima Princessa DVDs for the little ballerinas in your life! Just think what an awesome Christmas gift for girls the Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker DVD would be (and a great introduction to the "real" Nutcracker Ballet to watch at home until she is old enough to take to "the ballet").
Review by O Momma Reviews:
Remember Prima Princessa? She’s back again! I was thrilled to find the new Nutcracker DVD unexpectedly in my mail box one day, as was Savannah. I grew up with the Nutcracker, watched several performances, and it by far is one of my favorite ballets. So, it was neat to be able to now share that story with her without having to brave taking a 2.5 year old to an uptown theater. She loved the first Prima Princessa DVD that told the story of Swan Lake and introduced basic ballet steps (see that review here). It introduced a love of dancing for her, and we since have started dance classes to help learn and have even more fun.
Just as with Swan Lake, this DVD is broken down into different segments alternating between the Nutcracker performance and learning ballet steps. Once again, this movie gets Savannah up and moving and interacting, which I love. The extras include the different beginning arm positions that they cleverly describe looks like a flower blooming. Savannah absolutely loves these movies, and we enjoy them as adults as well. These movies are top favorites at our house
A clip of the new Christmas video can be found on their website and can be purchased through Amazon. It would make a perfect Christmas gift for any girl!
Thank you to Prima Princessa team for sending me a complimentary DVD to review!
Thanks Leah for being the first mom blogger to review our new family Christmas DVD, "Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker"! We are thrilled to hear your daughter loves dancing to this Holiday DVD! Review by Mamacheaps:
Do YOU have a little princess? If so, you will absolutely need to check out this beyond cute DVD production: Prima Princessa presents the Nutcracker.
I received a copy of this DVD to review; it is ADORABLE!! I have always enjoyed the Nutcracker- there is just something about the show and the music that can catapult you right into the Christmas Spirit.
This Prima Princessa DVD takes such a unique approach to introducing kids to classic ballets... not only does it feature the actual Nutcracker ballet (performed on this DVD by the world famous San Fransisco Ballet Company), but the entire video is narrated by a cartoon ballerina- she explains what is happening during the production which will help to keep even the youngest viewer interested and captivated!
Throughout the DVD (between acts in the Nutcracker) there are demos of real ballet steps performed by students at the School of American Ballet. I have a feeling I'm going to be dusting off Lily Bean's tutus so that she can wear them while watching this video!
I love that this DVD (as well as the one that came before it, Prima Princessa presents Swan Lake) was created by two stay-at-home moms who realized that the market was lacking in creating ballet/dance movies for young children. They worked together to produce something that their own children would enjoy watching- I think you'll agree, they succeeded! I can't wait to watch this company grow and add more productions to their collection!
